The colourful blossom of spring has arrived, the delightful lambs are decorating the vibrant green fields and the feather dusters are coming out of hibernation!
Yes, at this time of year we like nothing more than to get our homes all spick and span and in shipshape for the new season. But if you overdo it, a spring clean can leave your back health less than sparkling!
Our renowned Fareham chiropractor shares the following tips for a safe spring clean this season:
1: Don’t Rush
It may seem like an obvious piece of advice to share, but plenty of spring-cleaners whip around at ‘break-neck’ speed because they are in a rush or tired.
The best thing to do is take regular breaks and drink water regularly. If you can’t finish the entire job in the time you have, then leave it until another day.
2. Be Careful When Moving Large Items
A good spring clean usually means pulling out certain pieces of furniture, but you should be mindful of the strain this can potentially put on your back. When lifting, make sure you keep your back straight and your knees bent. If you feel an item is too heavy or it brings on/ worsens any kind of pain, stop what you’re doing and don’t move it.
3: Stay Safe While Climbing
Be mindful of your safety if your cleaning task requires you to stand on a ladder or a step stool. Avoid being in any position that means you will have to twist, reach or overstretch and don’t lean too far to either side. Our chiropractor in Fareham advises that your belly button should not go beyond the sides of the ladder you’re using. Instead of contorting yourself into difficult positions, move your ladder or step stool each time you come to clean a new section of an area.
4: Watch Out For Clutter
Your home can get quite cluttered with utensils, tools and rubbish during a spring clean so make an extra effort to watch your step (another good reason not to rush!)! Try to keep stairs, landings and walkways clear of bags, boxes and general clutter and put everything away as you are going along.
Now that you’re all geared up for a safe spring clean, all that’s left to do is remember where you put those feather dusters!
