It’s said to be among the most stressful experiences in a person’s life – moving house.
The event of moving itself causes stress which in turn makes us unwell which is where a chiropractor can help. Not many people are aware that among the skills of a trained chiropractor is the ability to help deal with stress in the body.
On the day of a house move, there’s so much to do and it has to be done quickly and to a deadline that we often forget the basics of how to protect our back from injury.
These are injuries we see on a daily basis and if you’re looking for a chiropractor in the Portsmouth/Southampton areas then we can help you.
Among the help and advice we offer is how to avoid future painful incidents and here’s our quick guide to avoiding back pain while moving house:
a) Warm up! You won’t look silly doing a few easy bends and back stretches. Warm your muscles up as if you were going for a run – you are effectively about to begin some serious exercise!
b) Loading a weight into a car or van is difficult at the best of times, so you’ve been sitting in the car/van for a time then you’ll need to loosen your muscles and joints before lifting.
c) Firstly, face the direction in which you want to carry the weight. Always lift using a relaxed, straight back. Make sure your legs are at least your hips’ width apart with the knees bent.
d) Keep your head and shoulders directly above your waist and keep the weight you are carrying as close to you as possible – avoid twisting.
e) Avoid bending from the waist, which increases the stress on your lower back. Never keep the knees straight, as this will lead to over-stretching and damage to your back and never lift while twisting from the waist.
f) Try and lift with your feet about shoulder width apart or more. This will make you more stable. And don’t lift with your arms straight out, keep the elbows bent and to your side to minimise the stress on your back.
All straight-forward advice but you will be surprised at how many people fall into the trap of not warming up and bending over to pick up a heavy weight. Fortunately a chiropractor can help alleviate neck and back pain, and here at our clinic we would be pleased to help you.
We will take an initial assessment and put together a course of treatment for you. This can range from anything in helping you deal with stressful situations to resolving back and neck pain you got when moving home.
