Causes and Treatment of Back Pain and Sciatica

Nearly everybody will suffer a bad back at some time in their life. It may be acute pain that happens suddenly and is short-term, or it might be a regular and recurring problem causing chronic long-term pain.

Sciatica is also a common and distressing condition, that can leave life long changes in your health.

Whether your pain is mildly irritating or completely devastating to your life, it’s important to see a Specialist to relieve you of that pain and to prevent further and future damage.

A very small proportion of Back Pain and Sciatica cases may be due to an underlying health condition such as a broken bone, cancer, osteoporosis or an infection.

UPDATE August 2024 A fall in August 2023 resulted in a severe shoulder dislocation and a period in hospital. To improve my recovery, I decided that I would visit Homewood and made appointments to see Jo Kitchener. Her care and treatment at weekly intervals improved the shoulder function. By June 2024, following an ultrasound examination, showed that the damage to my shoulder joint was permanent. I will continue to see Jo and receive her treatment to ensure that the limited movement does not become worse. I am very, very grateful to Jo for her considerable efforts to improve and maintain my limited arm function. In addition I express my thanks to all the staff at Homewood for their welcome and service. Homewood is highly recommended to all seeking advice and treatment.

I cannot fault Homewood enough! I hurt my back during a gym session and had been given quite scary advice by a different chiropractor which was looking to be very expensive. After speaking to friends and hearing really positive reviews of Homewood I decided to go there for a second opinion. Claire was brilliant! She took one look at the x-rays the other practice took and advised me there wasn't much of an issue at all but having a examination would be a good idea. I have been for a few sessions with minor adjustments and some treatment, Claire always explains everything and talks me through the process, she is very professional and also personable. I have been pretty much signed off and will attend ad hoc for routine checks when I need to. The whole team at Homewood are great, you should all be very proud of yourselves ????. Thank you!

What  Happens When You First Visit Homewood Chiropractic

treatment room

The first step in treating your Back Pain and Sciatica effectively is to have a diagnosis. During your initial visit, we will perform a thorough examination to determine how best to care for you, including; a spinal examination, nerve, joint, and muscle tests, postural analysis and careful scrutiny of your medical, lifestyle and occupational history.

Our very experienced Chiropractors discuss their findings and diagnosis with you before carefully explaining how best to treat your problem.

This approach means your treatment can often start immediately. Occasionally we may suggest an XRAY, MRI or Diagnostic Ultrasound to clarify your condition. These tests are carried out in-house or at local facilities. You may also be referred immediately to your GP or a Medical Specialist in the appropriate specialism.

How Long Is A Course Of Chiropractic Treatment?

This depends on your diagnosis, condition and how you respond to treatment. However, you do not have to commit to months of care and the associated cost. With no minimum course of treatment, we strive to save both your back and your money – most people can be assessed and treated within a few sessions. Complicated and long-standing cases, which often includes Sciatica, can take longer to solve. Our average treatment time is 4.8 sessions. We also offer a Second Opinion Service which you can book to discuss an ongoing condition which is not responding as you would like. Just let us know that this is your wish when you book your Free Chiro Check or your New Patient Appointment.

We offer a regular check-up and follow-up service at the same charge as other treatments. Many people value the reassurance of a checkup and treatment to help keep themselves in tip-top condition and to help prevent flare-ups.
