Help Your Child Stay Back Safe

back care advice from our Fareham chiropractorThe time has come when parents and children are both preparing for the start of a new school year. For some children this may be the start in a new school and for others it means moving up to a new class. Whatever the circumstance, there’s plenty to get ready for from new school uniforms to last minute purchases of pens, pencils and paper. There always seems to be something else to get!

As chiropractors in a our busy chiropractic clinic in Fareham our attention is primarily focused on the health of your child’s spine and ways to help you take care of their spines.

With this in mind our chiropractors want to draw your attention to two specific areas at the start of this new term:

  • Posture and
  • Rucksacks

Maintaining a good posture is important for a healthy spine

Many patient we treat at Homewood Chiropractic Clinic are surprised to find that their poor posture is contributing to their back pain. The British Chiropractic Association has developed a simple three minute programme called Straighten Up UK specifically to help improve posture. The programme can be done by people of all ages and is ideal for children and parents. The exercises are simple and fun and the aim is to include the exercises into your daily routine just like brushing your teeth.

We have included a video below that you and your child can follow.

Rucksacks can be a good option for carrying

School bags are getting heavier so it’s important to think carefully about the type of bag your child is going to use and the weight they are carrying. Rucksacks are a good option, however, they do need to be carried and adjusted properly. Unfortunately, many children carry their rucksack over one shoulder which means that the weight is unevenly balanced.

The rucksack should be carried over both shoulders and the straps adjusted so that the weight is as close to the body as possible.

It’s important to check the contents of the rucksack on a regular basis to ensure your child isn’t carrying unnecessary weight around.
