New Year’s Resolutions For a Healthy Spine!

back care advice from our fareham chiropractorMillions of people are affected by back pain every day, and 80% of people will experience it at some point during their lives. So it makes sense that we should do everything we can to properly take care of our spines.  With the New Year just around the corner, our Fareham chiropractor has some great tips that you can implement to significantly reduce your risk of developing back pain.

Read on and take this advice; it will be worth it:

Lift correctly

Twisting the wrong way is one of the easiest ways to damage your spine. When lifting, stand as close to the object as you can, and use your legs and knees instead of your back or upper body to lift up the item.  Always keep your head down and  your back straight. If an item is too heavy for you, ask for help instead of keeping on trying to lift it.

Sleep well

Quality sleep is a crucial part of achieving good spine health. Your body needs a good night’s sleep to repair itself and there are certain sleeping positions that help encourage a healthy back.

If possible, try to sleep on your side, as sleeping on your stomach can put too much pressure on your spine. Sleeping on your side can also help to prevent sleep apnoea symptoms and give you a better night’s rest.

Stretch out

You should stretch your back and neck every day, according to our chiropractor. Maintaining your flexibility will help to keep your joints functioning as they should, which will reduce the risk of damage and injury. Make it your New Year’s resolution to start each day with a few good stretches. It will soon become an invigorating part of your morning routine!

Keep active

Being inactive will significantly increase your risk of back pain.  Whether you visit the gym, walk, cycle or swim, staying active and keeping your body moving  is one of the best ways to maintain a healthy spine. According to our chiropractor, the best exercise routine for your back and neck is one that includes stretching, strengthening, and aerobic activity.

Stay hydrated

Drinking plenty of water will help you maintain the soft tissue elasticity and fluidity in your joints.

Most people don’t drink as much water as they need, so make sure you keep topping up with H20!

These are simple and easy ways to significantly improve the health of your spine. They’re easy to stick to and your back will thank you for making these changes in 2018!
