Plan for a Pain-Free Winter!

back care advice from our fareham chiropractorThe wrath of winter can take its toll on people who suffer from back pain. Although there is not much scientific data to support the joint pain and weather connection, there are still effective measures you can take to get your back prepared for the colder season.

Here our Fareham chiropractor reveals some simple tips that will help your spine to stay healthy this winter:

1: Dress Warmly

Keep your back tucked away from the bitter cold by putting on extra layers. Implement an indoor exercise plan that will enable you to keep up with your current level of physical activity.

2: Enjoy the Benefits of Hot Water

Take a relaxing, hot bath instead of a shower and swim in heated pools. The warm water will work like a heat pack and help to sooth painful muscles and joints.

3: Get Sufficient Vitamin D

Winter provides less Vitamin D than summer, so make sure your diet is Vitamin D-rich.

4: Stay Safe

Winter is the season where people are more likely to suffer trips, slips and falls. Make sure you wear supportive shoes and be careful not to walk on any icy/ slippery surfaces.

 5: Eat Turnips

Turnips contain Vitamin A, C and E, which are all vital for healthy synovial membranes that line the joints. The antioxidant effects of Vitamin C and Vitamin E can also help to protect against free radical damage, which can worsen joint discomfort.

6:  Eat Mushrooms

Mushrooms contain a high amount of selenium, an antioxidant that can help protect against free radical damage throughout the body.

7:  Eat Broccoli

Broccoli provides a great source of immunity-boosting Vitamin C, which can assist in the prevention of joint damage. Broccoli also contains omega-3s and Vitamin E, which further support joint health.

8: Eat Pears

Pears are an excellent source of Vitamin C and copper, both of which help combat free radical damage.

9: Drink Plenty of Water!

People tend to drink less water during the colder season, so make sure you continue to take enough fluids and keep your body hydrated. Dehydration is a major cause of inflammation, muscle cramps and fatigue. The chillier days may make it tempting to fill up on hot drinks, but don’t underestimate the power of drinking H20!
