It’s summer—that wonderful time of year when fresh produce abounds. Here at our Fareham chiropractic clinic, there is nothing we love better than filling up on fresh, delicious and healthy food. Here are some of our favourite summer fruits and vegetables that are overflowing with amazing health benefits:
Corn
Whether it’s on the BBQ or in the kitchen, there’s just something incredibly “summer” about corn on the cob. But did you know that the antioxidants in corn can actually help to filter out some of the sun’s damaging rays? These very antioxidants can also help to lower your risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, which is the leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 60.
Tart cherries
Many people don’t know this but tart cherries provide an astonishing wealth of benefits for the body. As well as helping you to get a better night’s sleep and reduce post-workout pain, tart cherries are also thought to be a natural slimming aid. This is because the anthocyanins in tart cherries stimulate a molecule that helps speed up fat burning and reduce fat storage.
Tomatoes
We all know that regularly applying sun lotion is the best line of defence against the scorching summer sun, but eating tomatoes could give you an extra bit of protection, too!
Consuming more lycopene – the carotenoid that makes tomatoes red—may help protect your skin from sunburn.
Watermelon
Staying hydrated is absolutely crucial to your mind and body. During the sweltering summer months, it will also help to keep your body cool. But what many people forget is that water is found in foods as well! As well as providing skin-protecting lycopene, watermelon is 92 percent water! And of course, eating foods that are full of water will help to keep you satisfied on fewer calories. Eat more watermelon this summer and you’ll be headed for a win-win scenario!
