Spring Clean Your Back Health

back care advice from our fareham chiropractorThe sky is a little more blue, the flowers are a little more flowery and the sun is a little more sunny. Spring is upon us and life is blooming. But is your back still feeling like a dark and miserable winter’s day?  It won’t be for much longer with these top tips from our chiropractor in Fareham!

Improving the health of your spine is one of the most effective ways of boosting your wellbeing and reducing the risk of chronic back pain. And according to our Fareham chiropractor, it isn’t difficult to spring clean your back health.

So let’s get to it…

1: Allow Your Spine to Rest While Sleeping

Sleep is an incredible thing, and not least for the health of your spine. While you’re catching those 40 winks every night, those hard-working structures in your spine finally get the chance to rest and rejuvenate. To make the most of  this downtime, it’s important you invest in a mattress and pillow that will properly support your back.

2: Let Your Core Look after Your Spine

Did you know that strong core muscles (your lower back and abdominal muscles) will support your spine and take added pressure off your lower back?

These all-important core muscles can be toned and strengthened by simple daily exercises that your chiropractor can recommend for your back pain.  The more conditioned your core muscles are, the healthier your spine will be.

3: Wear Suitable Shoes

Those sky-scraper high heels may turn heads, but the damage they could do to your spine is nobody’s business.  (And that’s putting it gently!)

The shoes you wear play a big part in supporting your lower spine – whether you’re exercising or just going about your daily routine.  When you’re buying a pair of shoes, look for the type that offer a supportive base that will help to keep your spine and body in the correct alignment. A good way to test this is to make sure the area that fits the back of your heel is well-fitted but not too tight.  A good heel fit will prevent over pronation or supination (too much rolling of the foot to the outside or inside) and in turn, reduce the risk of your spine overcompensating for misalignments.  You can also use shoe inserts if you feel you need extra support.

4: Sit Well. Sit Less

Did you know that the discs in your lower spine are loaded three times more when you’re sitting rather than standing?  That’s why back pain professionals like our Fareham chiropractor are always warning about the dangers of sitting down for long periods of time.  We also tend to slouch and lean forward when we’re sat at a desk or working at a computer screen, which stresses the spinal discs even more.

Making sure you maintain good posture when seated will help to support the natural curves of your back and reduce the risk of back pain.

It’s also important that you avoid sitting for long periods of time whenever you can.  If your job requires a lot of desk work, stand up, stretch and walk around every 20-30 minutes. Remember that your spine was designed for movement, and it needs to remain active to receive crucial nutrients to keep it healthy.

These simple tips from our chiropractor at Homewood Chiropractic Clinic in Fareham are simple ways to help improve the health of your spine.  We encourage you try to remember these everyday things you can do for your spine. Even the smallest changes can make a big difference when it comes to back pain.
