Stay healthy this winter with tips from our Fareham Chiropractor

Well the nights are definitely closing in fast and with winter approaching now is a good time to make sure we prepare our bodies for the months ahead.

Here are our favourite 3 tips for making sure you keep healthy and fit through the winter months.

1. Start your day with a healthy breakfast

Porridge is a wonderful way to start your day regardless of the season. However, there’s nothing quite like a warm bowl of porridge to start you off on a cold day. A good bowl of porridge is also very filling so it helps in stopping any mid-mornings cravings.

For a healthier option avoid using full-fat milk and use semi-skimmed or skimmed milk or just use water. Other milks such as Almond, Rice or Coconut make a great porridge too, why not try one of these as an alternative.

Leave out adding sugar or salt and add some fruit or dried fruit to the mix. You can ever add a handful of nuts or flax seeds for an added boost of goodness.

2. Eat more fruit and veg

It’s important to keep up your 5 A DAY in the winter months and maintain a healthy diet. Adding fruit to your porridge will help you here.

Winter vegetables such as carrots, parsnips and turnips are great for roasting and mashing. They are also wonderful ingredients to include in casseroles and soups. Perfect for cold days and evenings.

If you find you are craving for sweet things then avoid reaching for the chocolate and make sure your fruit bowl is full. Clementines and satsumas are perfect for this time of year as they are rich in Vitamin C. Replace sweets and biscuits that may be lurking in your cupboard with dried fruits such as dates and raisins.

3. Get outdoors and take some exercise

There are so many benefits to taking regular exercise. Exercise can help keep your in shape and boost your mood and your immune system. So don’t let the winter months put you off getting outdoors and taking some exercise.

In fact winter may be a perfect time to try some new form of activity and get all the family involved. Many cities now set up Winter Wonderlands that have an ice skating rink so now maybe a good time to give it a go!
