If you’re seeing a chiropractor for the first time, you may not know what to expect. While all chiropractors will have a slightly different consulting approach, there are some formalities that should be followed to ensure you receive the best treatment possible. According to our Fareham chiropractor, these should include:
Evaluating your history and symptoms
When and how your pain/ symptoms start
Where your pain is located
How you would describe the pain. Is it sharp, dull, burning, aching or throbbing? Does it come and go, or is it constant?
Whether or not your pain/ symptoms developed following an injury
Activities/circumstances that make your pain better or worse
As well as this type of evaluation, you should also be asked to provide information of family medical history, any pre-existing medical conditions and information on previous injuries.
A Chiropractic Examination
Before offering any kind of treatment, your chiropractor should conduct a thorough examination which should include general tests such as blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and reflexes. A good chiropractor will also provide orthopedic and neurological tests to assess range of motion, muscle tone, muscle strength and neurological integrity.
It may also be necessary for you to undergo further chiropractic tests to evaluate the affected area. This may mean posture analysis or chiropractic manipulation of the body part that is causing you pain.
Red Flags
While all chiropractors differ slightly in their approach, there are a few warning signs that could indicate that your chiropractor doesn’t have your best interests at heart. Things to look out for include:
Treatment sessions less than 15 minutes long.
A chiropractor who offers of a full spinal x-ray on consultation rather than an x-ray of a specific area. Bear in mind that x-rays are only required in a small proportion of patients and are often not necessary straight away.
Being offered a set number of treatments or a pre-paid treatment plan.
