Did You Know That Poor Posture is a Major Cause of Back Problems?

Four children, slouching on a couch in a living room

As children we probably all were told off at one stage or another for not sitting up straight or slouching. While most of these rebuttals were intended to improve the way we looked and the affect it had on others most of us probably never realised the long term affect our “slouching” would have on us.

So often our current lifestyles do little to help us improve our posture. Many of us living ‘stop/start’ lifestyles; dashing about one minute, full of stress and time pressure and then subject ourselves to long periods of sedentary behaviour; driving longer distances, playing computer games and watching TV.

It has now come to light that our old slouching habits and daily lifestyle which often result in poor posture have become a major cause of back problems. If you are experiencing, or have experienced, back pain you know what an impact it can have on your life.

Your posture can have a significant impact on the health of you back.

If you have poor posture, all is not lost.

You can use a simple effective 3 minute exercise routine that has been designed to improve posture and help reduce the risk of back pain to you.

This exciting programme has been made available to you by the British Chiropractic Association.

The Straighten Up UK programme has been specifically designed to:

  • promote balance,
  • strength and
  • flexibility in your spine.

It should be done on a daily basis and become part of your daily routine, just like brushing your teeth.

The programme is divided into three simple sessions. They are easy to learn and do. The sequence of exercises consists of precise, slow stretches, each with a specific purpose. The three sessions are:

  • Stars: Warm Up
  • Flying Friends: Posture Care
  • Core Balance: Finish the Session

The exercises can be adapted to suit individual capabilities. However, you should always discuss any new exercise programme with your GP, chiropractor or other health care practitioner before you start.
